Mike Stanton

Went deep for his 12th homer on the year and drove in 3 in a losing effort for the Marlins tonight. His ISO sits at a ridiculous .279 for the year and he's only 22 years old. People who are still worried about his average driving down his value need to get over it because this kid is going to lead the National League in homers on multiple occasions over the next 10 years. He's showing a better eye at the plate this year too, as his k rate is down 5%. He represents the definition of fantasy gold in keeper and dynasty leagues in what now has become a power deprived MLB.

Shaun Marcum

Was in line for the win Thursday night after allowing 2 earned through 7 quality innings. Unfortunately the Milwaukee bullpen imploded and cost him a shot at his 7th win. He's unquestionably been there ace so far with Zach Greinke still ironing things out and he's helped the Brewer's justify giving up Brett Lawrie in a deal a lot of baseball people questioned. He's a top 10-15 starter for fantasy purposes for the remainder of the season.

Asdrubal Cabrera

Had a great day at the plate Thursday, going 4/6 with 3 rbi. He's hitting .306 for the season and has been fantasy's #2 shortstop so far. Its tough to gauge if the power is completely legit looking ahead, but the 25 year old Cabrera has shown he can flat out rake at the big league level. He was picked up off the free agent list in a lot of standard mixed leagues and owners who picked him up hoping to ride out a little hot streak have found gold.

Tommy Hanson

Picked up his 6th win of the season tonight against the Padres. He allowed 2 earned runs and struck out 4 in lowering his era to 2.82. You won't find many starters walking around with the type of talent Hanson possesses and his peripherals suggest frontline numbers for years to come. His only issue so far this season has been efficiency, as his pitch counts haven't allowed him to go really deep into many games. Atlanta is getting away with it with guys like Venters and Kimbrel at the back end of their bullpen but in order for Hanson to take the final step into the elite class of starters he'll need to become more efficient.

Joey Votto

Went yard for the 7th time tonight in the Reds 4-3 win against Milwaukee. He went 3/4 on the night, raising his slash to an absurd .338/.468/.532 for the season. The homers will undoubtedly start coming in bunches for the reigning NL MVP. He is and will continue to be one of the 5-7 most valuable assets in keeper leagues for years to come.

Rick Porcello

Improved to 5-3 Thursday night with a victory over the Twins. With the exception of his start last time out against Boston, Porcello has been very good since the middle of April and his season era now stands at 3.79. There's mixed league value here as long he continues to keep the ball down.

Mariano Rivera

Picked up his 14th save today with a clean 9th in a 4-2 victory over Oakland. It's amazingly his 1st save in 3 weeks. His velocity is down a tick from his prime but he still remains one of the very few elite closers in the business.

Colby Lewis

Out-dueled David Price this afternoon, tossing 8 shutout innings and striking out 8 against the Rays. Lewis was dropped in a ton of leagues after a horrible April but has responded in his last 6 starts and was able to post a 2.43 era in May. His ownership % is back up over 90 as of Wednesday but if for some reason he is still available in your league be sure to grab him. He's a solid guy to have in the middle of your staff and there are good strikeout numbers here too.

Billy Butler

Hit a walkoff homer for the Royals Thursday afternoon. It was just his 4th homer of the year and his .296 average has been somewhat empty. At age 25 there's still room for growth here, as Butler has a 50 double season already on his resume. He'll need to turn a few more of those into longballs before being considered anything more than a top 12-15 1B in the future.

Brian Matusz

Looked solid in his season debut, allowing 1 run over 5 2/3 innings against the Mariners. The Orioles didn't allow his pitch count to get to high today, protecting their future staff ace in his first start of the season. Matusz has been highly touted for awhile but his ceiling will be hard to reach pitching in the AL East.

Adam Jones

Hit a go ahead homer in the 8th inning today for the Orioles that ended up being the game winner. He's hitting .296 on the season to go along with 7 homers and 30 rbi. There's always been elite potential here but there were concerns that Jones wouldn't be able to hit for the average necessary to put him in that class. He could be putting it all together this year and is a top 30 OF going forward.

Matt Holliday

Will be placed on the 15-day DL by the Cardinals on Thursday. His quad continues to give him trouble and the team feels it would be best to just shut him down for a couple of weeks. It's a tough blow for Holliday owners but there are currently more than a couple guys on the waiver wire that can somewhat fill his shoes in the power department for the time being.

Nelson Cruz

Woke up Wednesday with 3 hits, 1 rbi, and a stolen base against Tampa Bay. He's still hitting just .234 on the season but that will change quickly if he's able to stay off the DL. Cruz has been prone to hitting homers in bunches so owners simply need to exercise a little patience with him.

Brett Myers

Picked up just his 2nd win on the season Wednesday, allowing 1 earned run over 6 solid innings against the Cubs. Myers surprised fantasy owners last year with 14 wins and a 3.14 era but it doesn't appear as if he'll be able to repeat those numbers. Today's effort lowered his era to 4.82 on the year and he remains a spot starter in standard mixed leagues going forward.

Curtis Granderson

Took a lefty deep for the 9th time last night in Oakland. He's up to 17 homers for the year and trails only Jose Bautista in the majors. There's very little reason not to expect him to post his first 40 homer season, especially with the short porch at Yankee Stadium aiding him. He's an elite option going forward and might go down as the best draft day value of the year.

Brett Anderson

Was lit up last night, allowing 9 earned over 5 1/3 innings against the Yankees. Anderson remains an elite option to own in the AL but you won't find a much bigger injury risk.

Alex Rodriguez

Recorded his first 3 RBI game since April 23rd Tuesday. He also stole his 3rd bag of the season in what was his most productive day in a couple weeks. He's in decline, but the counting stats will remain elite in the Yankee's potent lineup.

Logan Morrison

Hit bomb #7 tonight and is currently hitting .320 and slugging an impressive .574 for the year. There were questions about Morrison's long-term power potential but he's answered critics with 7 homers in just 122 at bats. There are very few outfielders that are gaining the kind of value Morrison is in keeper leagues and he'll be shooting up draft boards next year to be certain.

Ian Kennedy

Didn't have it Tuesday night, lasting only 5 innings in a loss against the Marlins. He allowed 3 earned and walked 3 against a patient Marlin lineup. His era still sits at 3.16 for the season and he has plenty of value in leagues of all sizes.

Kelly Johnson

Kept up his torrid pace Tuesday night, homering for the 6th time in his last 9 games. His average remains low at .224 for the season, but Kirk Gibson and fantasy owners won't mind at all if he continues leaving the yard with anything close to this kind of regularity. Johnson has always been one of the streakiest hitters in the NL so you'll want to be sure and ride this one out.

Danny Espinosa

Stayed hot tonight, with 2 more homers for the Nats in a 10-2 win. He's gone deep 4 times in 5 games now and the power is actually for real. His average has also been a product of a low .222 BABIP, which should mean better things for Espinosa in the average department going forward. Owners waiting on Brett Lawrie may want to look here, as he's owned in just 19% of ESPN leagues.

Brett Lawrie

Might not be coming up soon for the Jays after all, as he was forced to leave the game in AAA-Las Vegas Tuesday night after being hit in the hand. Bad timing for the Jays and power starved owners at the 2B position alike. Stay tuned until more details come out.

Update: Lawrie suffered a bruised hand and avoided a serious amount of missed time. He might not be up with the Jays as expected on Friday but should be shortly thereafter.

Alex Gordon

Went 3/4 with 2 runs and a rbi out of the leadoff spot for KC tonight. Gordon dealt with an adjustment period after being moved into the leadoff role for the Royals but looks to be finally getting comfortable. His ownership % slowly increased this season as people who had previously been snake bit by Gordon were hesitant to add him. His .288/.349/.493 line has put him in a top 20 OF spot so far and the numbers look to finally be for real.

Jordan Lyles

Was impressive in his MLB debut, going 7 innings and allowing just 2 earned runs for a no decision in Chicago. He struck out 4 and walked none. Lyles is regarded as the Astro's top prospect and he showed why tonight. For fantasy purposes, Lyles will remain a fringe add in standard leagues due to his low k rates. Monitor him closely going forward.

Fernando Salas

Remained perfect in the closer for St. Louis tonight, nailing down his 10th straight save for the Cards. Owners were slow to pick up Salas, and rightly so as the closing situation was a mess for awhile. Salas has made sure everyone knows its his job to lose. He's one of the many examples already this season of why you shouldn't pay premium prices for closers in your drafts.

Justin Morneau

Doubled his home run total Tuesday night in a loss for the Twins. He took Max Scherzer deep on a 96 mph fastball, putting to bed the whispers that he could no longer hit the high heat. It's a great sign for the Twins and fantasy owners going forward because when healthy, the '06 MVP can carry teams and put up counting stats in bunches.

Corey Hart

Hit his 4th homer in just 80 at bats in May Tuesday night against the Reds. Hart's major issue so far this season has been staying on the field, as he's battled an assortment of injuries so far. There's plenty of power here, as he hit 31 homers last season. He's a must start OF in most formats when healthy.

Michael Brantley

Had 3 hits in 5 attempts in Cleveland's 6-3 win over the Jays tonight. Brantley went undrafted in standard mixed leagues this season but has provided top 30 OF value so far for the surprising Indians. There's not a lot of power here but the steals are for real and Brantley has plenty of value in 10 team mixed leagues and deeper going forward.

Alexei Ramirez

Stayed hot tonight, going 4/5 with 3 rbi to raise his slash numbers to .290/.351/.452 on the season. Ramirez seems to be one of those guys that falls further than he should in drafts on a yearly basis. There's top 5 SS value here at arguably the thinnest position in the game.

Cliff Lee

Fell to 4-5 Tuesday, after getting shelled against the Nationals to the tune of 6 earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. The strikeout rate for Lee remains elite but his efforts in recent starts have been fairly ordinary. He'll take a 3.94 era into his next start.

Dominic Brown

Hit his 1st bomb of the year tonight and went 2/4 for the Phillies. He's hitting at a .333 clip in limited at bats so far and is doing everything he can to assure he'll stay up with the team after Shane Victorino returns later this week. The majority of Brown's value lies in keeper and dynasty leagues, where his power and speed potential is very hard to ignore.

Angel Pagan

Had 2 hits Tuesday night in a loss for the Mets. He led off in place of Jose Reyes, who is away dealing with family issues, and responded with a solid game. Pagan was overlooked in a lot of fantasy drafts this season and was virtually unowned in a majority of leagues after battling an oblique injury during the early part of the season. There is a lot of value here, as Pagan hit 11 homers and stole 35 bags last year. Pick him up before someone else does if you need help in the outfield.

Kyle Farnsworth

Picked up his 10th save of the season Tuesday night with a clean 9th for the Rays. The closing situation in Tampa Bay was unclear heading into the year but Farnsworth has settled into the role nicely and has a firm grasp on things for now. He's blown just 1 save on the season.

Ike Davis

Has been shut down for at least the next 3 weeks by the Mets. Further tests revealed that his ankle is not healing so he'll be placed back in a walking boot. Its a tough break for the Mets and fantasy owners, as Davis was off to a monster start.

Alfonso Soriano

Has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Cubs. It doesn't look like he will have to miss anymore than the allotted time but he needs to be DL'd by owners immediately. Some hot replacement options include Angel Pagan, Michael Morse, and Ryan Ludwick.

Evan Longoria

Is back in the cleanup spot for the Rays Tuesday night. The move by manager Joe Maddon was designed to get Longo's bat heated up and he responded, going 5/11 with 4 walks. If he's still available at a discount in your league act quickly.

Monday, May 30, 2011

Jake Peavy

Was impressive Monday night, allowing 3 runs over 7 innings against a red-hot Boston lineup for his 2nd win on the season. His whip sits at an impressive 0.88 and he's also sporting a 16/1 strikeout to walk ratio. If he can stay off the disabled list there is plenty of mixed league value here.

Chad Billingsley

Scattered 11 hits over 7 innings against Colorado Monday for his 4th win of the season. He allowed a single run and struck out 8. He's been solid all season, posting a 3.46 era and a k/9 over 8. Consider him a solid #4 starter in mixed leagues and very solid #5 going forward.

Andre Ethier

Had 2 hits and 3 rbi in a 7-1 win over the Rockies tonight. His average sits at an impressive .330 but its been somewhat empty as he has hit only 5 homers on the season. A few more balls leaving the park is all that is separating Ethier from the elite outfield ranks. He's hit 30 homers before and a return to that number would make him a great fantasy #2 OF to own.

Justin Upton

Went off Monday night, with a 5/5, hr, 3 rbi, 3 r, 1 sb line. It was one of those games that keep Upton owners mindful of the fact that he still has time to put it all together. Still only 24 years old, he remains one of the most valuable assets to own in keeper leagues.

Matt Joyce

Went 2/4 Monday night with 1 rbi. He's now boasting an absurd .368/.426/.620 line. Joyce has always mashed right handed pitching, but its obvious Andrew Friedman and the Tampa Bay front office saw something more when they traded for him in 2008. Unless you play in extremely soft leagues there won't be much value in attempting to sell high so its advisable to just ride the wave for as long it lasts.

Michael Young

Went 3/6 tonight and is now hitting .340 for the season. There were whispers out of Texas in spring training that Young's playing time might take a hit after the Rangers decided to sign Adrian Beltre to play 3B. Young, regarded as one of the most professional guys in the game, put the team first and has let his play do his talking. The 2005 AL batting champ is rapidly approaching 2000 career hits and is still a great infield option for fantasy owners.

Prince Fielder

Went 3/4 tonight and is now sporting a .291/.388/.543 triple slash to go along with 11 homers and 42 steaks. Fielder is bouncing back nicely from last years rather pedestrian numbers for someone of his stature and is a top 5 1B option going forward. There are only a handful of guys in the majors that are capable of putting up production like the prince.

Justin Turner

Drove in at least 1 run for the 6th consecutive game against the Pirates on Monday. He's being aided by an unsustainable BABIP right now but the rbi production is starting to become hard to ignore. The 2B position is so shallow that he's worth at least a short term add for owners who are in need of help in the middle infield.

Rajai Davis

Had 3 hits tonight to raise his average to .277 for the year. More importantly for owners, he also has 15 stolen bases. He's starting for the Jays nearly every game and he'll remain an elite source of steals as long as that continues.

Jo-Jo Reyes

Ended his 28 start drought without a win Monday in impressive fashion, throwing a complete game against the Indians and allowing a single earned run. The win for Reyes allowed him to remain tied for the record of 28 starts without a win. He's a mediocre option even in deep AL-only leagues, so this isn't much more than a feel good story.

Aaron Crow

Has replaced Joakim Soria as the Royal's closer. He's averaging nearly a strikeout per inning and is a must add in all formats. Its not currently known if Soria will get another chance this season to close but there is next to no chance of the Royals dealing him now with where his value currently sits. Enjoy the ride with Crow until we hear otherwise.

Madison Bumgarner

Threw his 7th straight straight quality start today and it was good for just his 2nd win of the season. His numbers are somewhat a product of his home ballpark in San Francisco as his peripherals suggest, but he has value in most formats. Wins continue to be one of the flukiest stats in baseball but unfortunately they still carry a lot of weight in the majority of fantasy leagues. Bumgarner is a fine own in deep mixed and a great option to have at your disposal for his home starts.

Doug Fister

Got his 3rd win of the year today, allowing 3 runs over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out 9, which was definitely fluky considering his k/9 sits around 6.0. It was a nice effort, but he's nothing more than a streaming option going forward.

Torii Hunter

Busted out Monday, going 3/5 with 2 bombs and 4 rbi. He was able to turn back the clock a little, as its clear the 9-time gold glove winner is in decline. There is still value here as a #4/#5 OF option in mixed leagues for the remainder of the season.

Albert Pujols

Hit his 9th homer of the year today in a 7-3 loss to the Giants. He's still hitting just .262 on the season and while that has been largely a product of his career low .251 BABIP, there is legitimate cause for concern here. His isolated power (ISO) sits at an almost unbelievable .138 for the season and his BB rate is down nearly 6%. It's still too early for any talks of a decline for the 3-time MVP but track his progress closely over the next couple of months.

Robinson Cano

Had 2 hits Monday for the Yankees to raise his average to .284 for the season. His avg and obp remain down from previous seasons but there should be very little cause for concern. The ultimate sell high opportunity was probably last season, as we saw what might of been his career year, but the fact remains he's the best 2B in the business at a very shallow position.

Bartolo Colon

Rebounded nicely after his worst start of the season to shutout the Athletics Monday. The effort lowered his era to 3.26 for the season and the strikeouts continue coming. Colon had a relatively unknown surgery in the off-season known as Platelet Rich Plasma therapy and its revitalized his career, as his fastball is reaching levels it hasn't reached in years. It won't be the last time we hear about this surgery. Continue starting Colon with confidence.

Hunter Pence

Had a monster game for the Astros Monday going 3/4 with a homer, 2 rbi, and 4 runs. He's up to 7 jacks and 40 rbi for the year and looks like he'll stay in the top 15-20 rankings of outfielders for the season. There is added value in knowing just how consistent Pence has been, as he's posted exactly 25 homers the last 3 seasons.

Laynce Nix

Stayed hot Monday, homering for the 8th time in the Nationals 5-4 loss to the Phillies. Nix is nothing more than a short term add while he is hot, as his unsustainable .368 BABIP and 34/5 strikeout to walk rate leaves much to be desired. Add where power is needed.

Ryan Howard

Hit his 12th homer of the year Monday, to go along with his 41st and 42nd rbi. Howard's average is still at just .252 and he's yet to record a homer against a left-handed pitcher all season. There are signs of decline here at age 31, and owners are approaching the time when they'll need to decide if moving him in keeper formats would be prudent. Howard does have "name value" going for him, so if an opportunity presents itself to sell for close to full value it'd be advisable.

Victor Martinez

Hit his 5th homer of the year in the Tiger's 6-5 win over Minnesota. He's starting to heat up at the plate and its important in more ways than one. Miguel Cabrera is starting to see better pitches, and he too hit a homer today, his 10th on the year. Martinez will continue to play a vital role in Detroit's success and he's one of the top catcher options in fantasy baseball.

Jason Kubel

Went 2/3 Monday for the Twins before being pulled due to a left foot sprain. The severity of the injury is currently unknown but consider him day to day. The hits just keep coming for the 17-35 Twins.

Jose Reyes

Will miss the next 3-7 days following the death of his grandmother. The deadline has passed to bench him in weekly leagues but those in daily leagues need to sit Reyes down and monitor the situation to get an idea of when he'll be able to return for the Mets.

Francisco Liriano

Will probably end up missing his next scheduled start Thursday against KC. He felt additional discomfort in his throwing shoulder while playing catch Monday and a trip to the disable list appears imminent. Its a tough blow for fantasy owners, as Liriano appeared to be figuring things out over his past 4 starts, recording 2 wins and posting a 2.52 era.

Shane Victorino

Looks as if he'll be able to return for the Phillies by this weekend. He has just started a short rehab stint in AA and said his hamstring is feeling a lot better. He's annually underrated in fantasy drafts but is a nice top 30 option at the OF position with his ability to steal bags and hit for some power.

Matt Holliday

Should be able to return to the Cardinal lineup today after getting through workouts Sunday morning. His numbers have been driven up a little bit by his .397 BABIP but he'll likely finish as a top 10 OF for fantasy owners anyway. Get him active this afternoon if his name appears on the lineup card.

Sunday, May 29, 2011

Miguel Cabrera

Went 3/7 over both games of Detroit's doubleheader Sunday against Boston. His line sits at .315/.430/.552. Victor Martinez' return to the lineup has started to keep opposing starters a little more honest, as Cabrera wasn't getting much to hit in May. The 9 bombs to date are a bit of a disappointment but his off field issues appear to be settled and Cabby will undoubtedly post his usual monster campaign for the Tigers when all is said and done this season.

Justin Verlander

Stifled the hottest hitting team in the world Sunday night, going 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox. It was his 5th win of the year and an important one for Detroit who had been 0-5 against Boston so far this season. The only potential problem with Verlander's start was the fact that he threw 132 pitches but Jim Leyland decided to lean on his horse heavily in order to get the victory. The move ended up paying off.

Jair Jurrjens

Improved his league best era to 1.51 for the year after a brilliant 8 inning effort against Cincinnati Sunday night. This start will move him into the top 10 of ESPN's player rater rankings for starters. Jurrjens has reinvented himself after injury troubles and has become more of a cerebral guy and not just a hard thrower. He should remain a solid #2 SP and a very solid #3 for owners moving forward.

Martin Prado

Hit his 7th jack of the year and drove in 2 in a 3-2 win Sunday night. He also threw out the tying run at the plate in the top of the 8th inning to preserve the win for Atlanta. Some of Prado's value in fantasy is tied up in his positional flexibility but he also handles the bat extremely well. He's a solid #3 OF and a top 10 2B/3B option.

Carlos Quentin

Hit his 13th bomb of the season for the White Sox on Sunday. Quentin has had trouble with injuries in the past but when on the field there are only a handful of players that possess his kind of raw power. He also seems to hit them in bunches when seeing the ball well and is the type of guy that can carry fantasy lineups on any given week. Expect 20-25 homers from him for the rest of the season barring any trips to the DL, making him a top 30 OF option the rest of the way.

Aramis Ramirez

Homered for the 1st time in 40 games Sunday in a 3-2 win for the Cubs. It's unbelievably just his 2nd homer on the season to go with just 18 rbi. Ramirez has had some huge 2nd halves in past years and the power should be coming soon.

CC Sabathia

Earned his 6th win of the year Sunday, allowing 1 earned run over 8 innings. His era for the year is now 2.98 and the wins will continue to come behind the Yankee's potent lineup. Sabathia remains one of the biggest horses in the game and is a top 10 starter again this season.

Ryan Braun

Went 3/4 Sunday and stole a bag for the 3rd straight game in Milwaukee's win over the Giants. There were concerns in some circles about Braun's continued drop in ISO but he's answered nicely with 12 jacks already this season. He's the #1 OF in fantasy right now and will continue to be a top 5 option for years to come.

Ian Kinsler

Homered for the 7th time Sunday before being ejected in the 5th inning for arguing balls and strikes. His average is still at just .240 on the year, but with 7 homers and 10 stolen bases he remains a highly valuable 2B option. His biggest issue is staying on the field, as he's missed big chunks of time in 3 of the last 4 years due to an assortment of injuries.

Mike Napoli

Hit his 2nd homer in as many days Sunday to help the Rangers best the Royals. His limited amount of playing time has made him a frustrating own in leagues so far as he's only playing 3 or 4 days a week. There's value here in deep mixed leagues and more specifically 2 catcher leagues. Owners in standard leagues probably need to look elsewhere for help at the catcher position.

Justin Morneau

Had 3 hits Sunday to go along with 2 rbi. He has started to find it a little at the plate but the power remains missing, as he has hit just 2 bombs so far this year. He's struggling against the high fastball right now but Joe Mauer's return to the lineup in the next couple of weeks will probably go a long way in helping out with that.

Clayton Kershaw

Was masterful Sunday, throwing a 2 hit shutout against the Marlins. He stuck out 10 and lowered his era to 2.62 for the season. He's leading the National League in strikeouts and is also getting deeper into games more consistently. There is a Cy Young award in Kershaw's future.

Mark Trumbo

Hit his 9th homer of the year Sunday for the Angels. He'll continue to be the everyday 1st basemen for the Halos with Kendrys Morales out for the year and has produced the power that he showed last year in AAA. He's owned in just 33% of ESPN leagues right now because his average remains somewhat of a liability, but those in need of power should take a look here.

Yovani Gallardo

Dominated the Giants Sunday over 8 shutout innings for his 7th win on the season. There were concerns over his strikeout rate early on, but with 36 of them in 32 innings in May, those concerns can be safely put to bed. The chance to get him at a discount has officially ended.

John Danks

Fell to 0-8 Sunday after getting whacked for 9 earned in 4 innings against the Blue Jays. A couple of weeks ago he was a buy-low target but after even more regression has been seen in his last few starts he can no longer be considered as such. With a 5.25 era and 1.51 whip for the year, feel free to drop him for better options in ESPN standard leagues.

Aaron Hill

Finally hit his 1st homer of the year Sunday, a grand slam, in Toronto's 13-4 win against the White Sox. Hill has his average up to .240 on the season and has 7 steals which have come as a nice surprise for owners. He was drafted for his power and there is no reason to expect it not to come around soon. He's an asset in 10 team mixed leagues and up due to the lack of depth at the 2B position.

Jonathan Papelbon

Got his 10th save Sunday against the Tigers. David Ortiz gave the Red Sox a 4-3 lead after hitting a pinch hit homer in the top of the 9th, allowing Papelbon to come in and strike out 2 in a clean 9th.

Jeremy Hellickson

Improved to 6-3 Sunday with a win over the Indians. He threw 7 scoreless and recorded 6 strikeouts. His stuff has been really good all year as his .208 BAA suggests but the walks are still somewhat of a concern. He's not making many headlines due to James Shields and David Price having monster campaigns so far the Rays but there is top 40 SP value here going forward.

Jose Reyes

Had 4 hits Sunday afternoon, including 2 triples, in a 9-5 win against the Phillies. His average is up to .335 for the season to go along with 19 stolen bases. He's firmly back into the elite ranks at shortstop with both Hanley Ramirez and Troy Tulowitzki. If he can play 150 games this season he's likely to get a big contract from someone in the offseason.

Andrew Bailey

Has been activated from the 15 day disabled list by Oakland. It's expected that he'll pitch in 7th and 8th inning situations initially and be eased back into the closer role. As long as he's healthy he'll remain a top 10 closer in fantasy leagues.

Ichiro Suzuki

Has seen is average fall to .277 for the season after going 0-6 Saturday. He fell in a lot of drafts coming into the season and it appears as if the fall was warranted. He has yet to homer and if the average doesn't come back to the elite level its been in the past his value will remain very limited. Its hard to see this as anything but the start of the decline for one of the best hitters the game has ever seen.

Jered Weaver

Threw a 2 hit shutout against the Twins Saturday night. He was left with a no decision however, as the Twin's Anthony Swarzak was equally as brilliant. Weaver will end May without a win after starting the season 6-0 but his era sits at 2.10 with a ridiculous .95 whip. He's currently the #1 ranked starter on ESPN's player rater and it wouldn't be surprising at all to see him there at the end of the 2011 season.

Gaby Sanchez

Had 2 doubles Saturday against the Dodgers, raising his line to .318/.398/.495 for the season. Sanchez probably will never hit for elite power in the majors but he remains a very underrated 1st baseman both in real life and fantasy.

Cole Hamels

Got a rare win against the Mets last night, striking out 10 over 7 innings and allowing just 2 earned runs. His era now sits at 3.01 to go along with a fantastic 1.02 whip. He's a top 10 starter for the foreseeable future.

Bud Norris

Allowed 6 runs, 2 earned in a loss against the Diamondbacks last night. He had a very impressive start to the season and the K rates have remained elite, but his whip has crept up to 1.34 on the season and Tommy John surgery could be in Norris' future if he continues to throw so many sliders. Sell high where you can.

Nelson Cruz

Went 3/4 with his 9th jack in just 35 games Saturday night for the Rangers. There are very few hitters in the game as productive as Cruz when he's on the field but he continues to be a frustrating own as injuries have kept him from ever playing a full season. With that being said, getting full value for him in deals can also be difficult and its possible owners who drafted him might simply want to ride him out for as long as they can and hope the legs hold up.

James Shields

Allowed 3 earned over 7 innings last night against the Indians. He was somewhat on the ropes early on after giving up 3 earned runs in the first 2 innings but he managed to settle down and ended up posting another quality start. There's regression coming here but it'd be hard to argue against Shields as the Cy Young favorite if the season ended today.

Evan Longoria

Went 2/4 with a homer Saturday night for the Rays. He batted in the 1 hole and it seems as if it may of woken him up. He's still hitting just .222 for the season but owners should expect a hot stretch from Longoria very soon.

Randy Wolf

Pitched a gem Saturday afternoon against the Rockies but was left with a no decision. He had a shutout and a 2-0 lead through 7 but allowed the 1st two to reach in the top of the 8th that would eventually come around to score after he was pulled through 7 1/3. It was still a good effort against a good hitting club and solidifies Wolf as roster worthy in 10 team mixed leagues and up.

Randy Wells

Was lit up for 5 earned runs over 4 innings in his return to the rotation for the Cubs. There wasn't much of an expectation in his 1st start back for Chicago, as his minor league starts were equally as bad, but he remains an interesting name to monitor when looking for spot starters in deeper mixed leagues.

Paul Konerko

Recorded 2 hits today, raising his triple slash to .293/.367/.480. Konerko was a draft day value this year, as people were skeptical he could repeat his great numbers from last year. With 10 bombs and 38 rbi already, he's quickly putting those worries to rest.

Jose Bautista

Jose Bautista had another monster game Saturday afternoon, hitting his 20th homer of the year and knocking in three. His pre-season rank across most reputable sights reflected skepticism over his breakout campaign last season but it now looks very legitimate. He's a favorite for AL MVP honors right now, along with Adrian Gonzalez, and has a good shot of being fantasy baseball's #1 player for the 2011 season.

Paul Maholm

Picked up just his 2nd win on the season throwing a shutout in a 10-0 blowout against the Cubs. He's not a name that a lot of people are familiar with and wins will continue to be tough to come by but there's actually some mixed-league value here. He's sporting a 3.18 era on the year and should be used in very specific spot starts going forward.

Matt Garza

Looks like he'll end up missing just one start for the Cubs, barring any setbacks during Sunday's bullpen session. This comes as a huge relief to Chicago and fantasy owners as Garza was averaging over 10 strikeouts per 9.

Adam Lind

Is expected to return by June 3rd for the Blue Jays. He's been out with a back injury and the hope here is that it won't zap him of the power he began to display again earlier this year. He should be activated as soon as he's back in Toronto's lineup.

Brandon Webb

Will make his first start since 2009 Monday in AA ball for the Rangers. His velocity is still way down and this situation is only worth monitoring for now. The former Cy Young winner still has a long road back to being anything close to what he has been in the past.

Brian Matusz

Will make his season debut Wednesday for the Orioles if his bullpen session goes well this weekend. Activate and add as needed. Matusz is extremely talented but an ascent to the elite starter ranks in the future will remain difficult while pitching in the AL East.

Mark Teixeira

Hit his 14th bomb of the year and his 5th in his last 8 games Saturday night against the young Seattle phenom Michael Pineda. Teixeira had cooled off considerably after coming out of the gates on fire but looks to be finding his stroke again. The average continues to be lower then what we were used to seeing it at in the past but the power remains consistent, as does Teixeira as a top tier fantasy 1B.

Scott Baker

Threw 7 scoreless innings while striking out 6 Friday night but was left with a no decision. Baker is averaging a strikeout per inning and his era sits at 3.65. The wins are going to continue to be hard to come by behind the Twin's anemic offense  but he still needs to be owned in more than 14% of ESPN leagues, as he is right now.

Juan Nicasio

Will make his MLB debut Saturday for the Rockies. His pedigree looks to be similar to that of Jorge De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin, both who came up fast through the Rockies system. Nicasio's secondary stuff is very much a work in progress but the fastball touches 100 at times. He's a speculative short-term add and a must add in very deep dynasty leagues.

Francisco Liriano

Has been scratched from his upcoming start Saturday with left shoulder soreness. It's not known how severe the injury is as of now but bench him for today and take a look at some other spot-start options if need be.

Eric Hosmer

Went 4/7 with his 4th bomb of the year while driving in 4 in a 14 inning win for the Royals. He's drawing comparisons early on to Joey Votto, which is some of the highest praise a prospect can receive. That being said, the swing is pretty and the kid is legit. He's an own in all but the shallowest of leagues and is extremely valuable in keeper formats.

Rajai Davis

Stole his 14th bag of the year tonight in a win against the White Sox. He should continue to run wild on the basepaths and is an asset in all formats.

Roy Oswalt

Allowed 1 earned run over 6 innings in a no decision for the Phillies. The concern here is the lack of strikeouts as he's only recorded 8 over his last 18 innings. His era still sits at 2.60 however and he remains a weekly must-start.

Ubaldo Jimenez

Fell to 0-5 Friday night after getting shelled at home against the Cardinals. He gave up 6 earned runs and 12 hits over 6 innings of work. Jimenez is still a hold in keeper leagues but should be firmly planted on benches until he shows signs of turning it around in his next couple of starts.

Colby Rasmus

Put together a 4/5, 3 rbi, 2 r, 1 sb line Friday night in a Cardinal's win. The power hasn't been there quite yet for Rasmus, with only 3 homers so far on the year, but he's a good buy-low regardless.

Rickie Weeks

Hit his 9th homer of the year tonight to go with 3 rbi in a Brewer's loss. He's slowly shedding the injury prone tag he had been labeled with after playing a full season last year and starting strongly this year as well. He's providing a rare power/speed combination at 2B that owners should continue to enjoy.

Brian McCann

Had 2 hits for Atlanta in a loss Friday night. The power hasn't quite been there so far for McCann, who has only 4 homers on the year, but he'll remain a top 5 option at the shallow catcher position going forward.

Mike Adams

Took the loss for San Diego tonight after allowing a walk-off homer to Mike Morse for the Nats. Consider it a minor bump in the road for Adams, who remains one of the league leaders in holds and would potentially be in line for the closer roll if this is finally the year the Pads decide to move Heath Bell at the trade deadline.

Jon Rauch

Picked up his 6th save of the year tonight with a clean 9th in a 4-2 win against the White Sox. The Jay's closer situation is a mess right now as there were reports Octavio Dotel might even get a crack at the gig. Add Rauch for now as needed but understand the situation remains fluid until someone takes a firmer hold of the job.

Juan Pierre

Continued to heat up tonight with 2 more hits for the White Sox. He's now 11 for his last 30 to bring his average up to .271 for the year. The important thing to note here is that Ozzie Guillen has at least temporarily given Pierre the green light on the base paths as he's recorded 2 steals in the past 3 games. If he is able to continue stealing bags he'll once again be a great asset in mixed leagues going forward.

Adrian Gonzalez

Collected 2 more hits in Boston's win Friday night against Detroit. His .338/.385/.549 line to go with a league-leading 44 rbi has Gonzalez looking like an early favorite for MVP. Boston's vision of how A-Gon would fit into their lineup couldn't be going any smoother.

Jacoby Ellsbury

Had a monster game in Detroit Friday night with 2 hits, 1 hr, 1 sb. He's up to 6 homers and 18 steals already on the year and it seems as if the murmurs heading into the year about him playing with a chip on his shoulder after last years injury riddled campaign were true. The power is a nice surprise and could eventually solidify his place as a top 10 fantasy OF for the year.

David Price

Was absolutely filthy Friday night, earning the win by throwing 7 shutout innings and striking out a season-high 12. It was nice to see him rebound after a shaky start last time out but there never was much of a reason to be concerned. The lefty is one of the best young starters in the game and an ace for almost any fantasy staff.

Angel Pagan

Is back for the Mets tonight and will bat 6th. He's available in majority of leagues and could provide some cheap speed for owners experiencing multiple injuries in their outfield.

Andrew McCutchen

Went 2/4 with his 8th and 9th stolen bases Friday against the Cubs. His triple slash sits at .251/.354/.454 but the power/speed combo will keep him in the upper ranking of outfielders both now and in the future. There are multiple 25hr/25sb seasons in his future.

Alfonso Soriano

Hit his 12th bomb of the year Friday in a 4-2 loss to the Pirates. It was his 1st since May 2nd. Soriano should remain valuable as a top 30-35 OF for the remainder of the year however if he can stay on the field.

Scott Sizemore

Was traded by Detroit Friday afternoon to the Oakland Athletics for RP David Purcey. Sizemore wasn't cutting it as Detroit's primary 2nd baseman after being recalled from AAA but the trade is still puzzling. Purcey is undoubtedly one of those "power arms" Dave Dombrowski covets, and he's a lefty, but the guy can't find the plate to save his life. Detroit's 2nd base situation is something to avoid moving forward in fantasy, as the position has yielded just 2 extra base hits in 131 at bats for the season.

Hanley Ramirez

Is expected to return Friday night for the Marlins. His numbers are down drastically this season and a buy-low situation in yearly leagues could be tricky. He remains a premium buy-low in keeper formats and if a frustrated owner in your league is willing to deal the opportunity needs to be taken advantage of.

Grady Sizemore

Has been activated from the 15 day disabled list by the Indians. He needs to be activated in all leagues.

Anibal Sanchez

Threw a shutout last night against the Giants. His ERA sits at 2.60 and he holds a 3 to 1 k/bb ratio. He's possessed frontline starting skills for awhile now and looks to finally be putting it all together for the fish.

Max Scherzer

Got rocked Thursday, allowing 7 earned runs in just 2 innings against Boston. There isn't much cause for concern as he simply ran into the hottest lineup on the planet. He should rebound nicely next time out.

Cliff Lee

Got the win last night, going 8 strong. He allowed 4 runs but struck out 8 for his 4th win on the season and remains a top 10 SP in all formats.

Chase Utley

Hit his 1st homer of the year last night in a 10-4 win. It's only his 2nd hit since returning but nonetheless a great sign going forward.

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Adam Dunn

Is back in the lineup for Chicago today. His average is still under the Mendoza line but he remains a solid buy low candidate. A change of leagues and an in-season appendectomy has slowed the slugger thus far.

Brandon Belt

Is reportedly being called up by the Giants as soon as today. He struggled earlier this year but his plate discipline was good and his numbers at AAA recently have been great. He's worth a look in deeper mixed leagues.

Grady Sizemore

Should be back in the lineup by this weekend after doing some running Thursday. If he gets off to a hot start upon his return selling for close to full value would seem prudent, as injuries have derailed him over the last several seasons and the average has been declining since 2007.

Andre Ethier

Is expected to return to the Dodger lineup Friday after sustaining multiple injuries after crashing into the wall earlier this week. The average has been a little empty with only 4 homers so far but he needs to be back into lineups regardless.

Buster Posey

Is scheduled to have a MRI on his left ankle today and the disabled list looks almost certain. Yadier Molina, Mike Napoli, and Kurt Suzuki are some alternative short-term options for Posey owners.

Jason Hammel

Looked strong as the loser last night, throwing 7 strong while allowing just 2 unearned runs. Owners in need of immediate SP help need to look here, as Hammel is currently owned in just 5% of ESPN leagues. His whip leaves something to be desired but he's been consistently strong this season with 7 quality starts in 10 attempts.

Jose Reyes

Raised his average to .316 for the year after 2 more hits last night. It's a little fluky for the career .287 hitter but more importantly for owners it appears the legs are back to being completely healthy. With 17 steals already on the season, those who bought at a discount in the offseason should be smiling. These are the kinds of picks that win championships.

Carlos Beltran

Collected 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2 rbi against the Cubs Wednesday. With a .287/.383/.548 line it looks as if the knees might finally be healthy. Playing right field has taking some of the pressure off Beltran and he should be considered a trade target for owners for the remainder of the season if the price is right.

Mike Stanton

Had 4 hits, including 4 rbi without leaving the yard Wednesday night, improving his triple slash to .275/.349/.575. His K% is down 4% this year and his ISO sits at a ridiculous .301. He'll remain a guy to target in dynasty leagues and owners should be hesitant to let him go unless they are blown away by a deal. Power of this kind in today's game is at a premium.

Ian Kennedy

Ran his record to 6-1 Wednesday night with a victory over the Rockies. There are signs of growth here, as the 3.01 era and 1.04 whip look pretty legitimate. He'll remain a solid #3 or #4 starter for fantasy teams going forward. Invest with confidence.

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Heath Bell

Notched his 10th save of the season with a clean 9th for the Padres. They aren't winning a ton of games but the ones they are winning are usually close ones, allowing one of the safest bets in the league in Bell to close things out.

Roy Halladay

Was fairly ordinary Wednesday, giving up 11 hits and 3 earned runs over 7 innings in a no decision against the Reds. He struck out 6 and walked 1 and remains one of the few elite starters in the game.

Jay Bruce

Collected 3 hits, including his 13th homerun of the year against the Phillies. The average is quietly up to .289 and he is starting to show why his ADP rose as high as it did this year. He'll likely only hit .300 a couple of times during his peak years but several 35-40 homer seasons should also be expected.

Jon Lester

Earned his 7th win of the season, pitching 6 scoreless while striking out 7. After a couple of shaky outings his ERA has now dropped to 3.36 on the season. He's easily one of the best young left handed starters in the league and has arguably the most potent lineup behind him. Expect the wins to continue coming.

Zach Greinke

Got his 3rd win of the season, giving up 3 earned over 7 innings while striking out 10. He also hit a homer, for those of you out there that play in leagues that count those statistics. His ERA stands at 5.79, possibly offering a buy low opportunity for the savvy owner. His K/BB ratio stands at a ridiculous 39/3 and the other peripherals suggest good things are coming.

Brandon League

Nailed down his 12th save of the year with a clean 9th inning. There were murmurs that his job might be in jeopardy but with a couple of solid outings recently and Aardsma's setback he needs to be owned across the board.

Erik Bedard

Kept it rolling Wednesday, pitching 6 scoreless innings for the win against the Twins, lowering his ERA to 3.48 for the year. Wins will continue to be hard to come by and he hasn't pitched deep into the season for years now but is currently a must own in all formats until the injury bug inevitably bites.

David Ortiz

Hit his 10th homer of the year Wednesday. He looks to be a draft day bargain with a current triple stash line of .303/.372/.545. Ortiz doesn't provide a lot of lineup flexibility with only DH eligibility, but expect 20 homers going forward in whats becoming a power-scarce league more and more by the day.

Matt Latos

Got the win against the Cardinals, going 8 strong and giving up just 1 earned run while striking out 7. It's a start that will undoubtedly help his owners relax a little as he hadn't lived up to the early round billing thus far. The velocity has returned and pitching half your starts at Petco doesn't hurt either. He remains a borderline elite keeper going forward.

Carl Crawford

May have finally busted out today, going 4/4 with a homer in a 14-0 route of Cleveland Wednesday afternoon. It should go without saying that the buy-low window has officially closed.

Lance Berkman

Went 2/4 Wednesday and recorded his 37th rbi, good for 2nd in the NL. He went largely undrafted in most leagues so trading for value at this point could prove to be tricky. Owners might be better off simply riding out the heater and rolling the dice on whether or not playing the outfield eventually catches up with him and lands him on the DL.

Mike Minor

Went 5 2/3 innings and gave up 1 run against the Pirates. Minor should be owned in dynasty formats already but could provide some immediate help in shallower leagues even if he's only keeping Beachy's spot in the rotation warm.

Jonny Venters

Pitched 2 scoreless innings to lower his ERA for the year to .59 and should be owned in 14 team leagues and up. Durability is a concern due to the number of innings he's already pitched but the simple fact is he is unquestionably the best non-closer in the business and will remain a ratio stabilizer throughout the season.

Mike Morse

Homered for the 3rd straight game and is 7 for his last 17. A very streaky career hitter, he should provide owners in need of power short term help.

Rafael Soriano

Will miss 6-8 weeks with whats being deemed as elbow soreness. The Yankees made the mistake of giving a RP multiple years and are already paying the price. Owners in holds leagues can safely drop him unless a DL spot is an option.

Gavin Floyd

Tossed 7 innings, allowing 1 earned against the Rangers. Solid outing from a perennially underrated starter and a guy who can help ratios, primarily whip.

Phil Hughes

Was transferred to the 60 day DL Wednesday. He needs to be dropped in all formats but deep AL-only and keeper leagues.

Matt Kemp

Went 3 for 4 Wednesday with a homer. He'll remain an elite option at OF if the Dodgers can continue to afford to field a team or until teams realize he is the only legit stick in LA's lineup. Those who bought low in dynasty and keeper formats did well.

Ted Lilly

Allowed 1 run in 6 innings against the Astros. His velocity remains down and he will continue to be a spot starter in 10 team-mixed against the bottom 1/3 of MLB teams.

C.J. Wilson

Allowed 1 run in 6 1/3 innings against the White Sox Wednesday, improving to 5-3 on the season and remains a solid top 30 SP option for the remainder of the 2011 season.
